I LOVE the idea of Marryoke – and today got my first enquiry to make one.

But “What is Marryoke?” I hear you say. It’s an unusual wedding idea for sure…

Basically it’s where your wedding guests make a music video for you – they get filmed singing and dancing to a song you love. Lots of clips of them from different points in your wedding day get edited together to make a fun music video, like a band would make if they were releasing a single.

And you’ll be pleased to know the guests can sing their hearts out if they want or just mime politely – and either way the music track gets played over them in the video. I’ll just grab groups of your guests at different points during the day to sing a few lines, do a quick dance, or just look good. What a great fun idea – I can’t wait to make it. And if you’d like me to make you one too – let me know!

Hmmm – Marryoke – Maybe you’d get a better explanation here 🙂

Marryoke is a niche product within the wedding industry which involves participants miming and performing a song of their choice. The footage is usually shot on the wedding day[1] although it is not an activity exclusive to weddings.[2] Once filmed, the footage is edited together so that it appears as if the participants are performing the song themselves. The phrase Marryoke is a play on the word karaoke due to their similarities; however a marryoke involves no actual singing from the participants being included in the final edit as the participants singing is lip synced to the original artist in editing. Marryoke has become popular as a form of wedding entertainment fun for guests.

As an aside my nephew has made a few genuine music videos – for Stereo Honey and The Amazons. He’s one of my 2nd camera guys.

And as a different idea for your fist dance – at my friends’ wedding the bride and groom surprised everyone with a choreographed routine. They started with a traditional first dance and suddenly there was a record scratch, and a music montage kicked in. Here is Ross and Ali’s first dance filmed by a friend…  – it still makes me laugh.

I think if I had thought of a Marryoke video for my own wedding I’d chose Taylor Swift Shake it Off. Or something by Bruno Mars. Come to think of it – Gangam Style 🙂
